Riverview hostage situation peacefully resolved by teamHCSO

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office is investigating a domestic violence-related incident in Riverview.

On May 20, 2023, around 1:05 p.m., deputies were called to Windsor Club Apartments for reports of a man and woman fighting.

When deputies arrived, they learned that an adult woman was being held against her will inside an apartment by Makayo Mackey, 42.

Out of an abundance of caution, fearing the man may be armed, Sheriff Chad Chronister immediately deployed SWAT, Crisis Negotiators and the Bomb Disposal Team.

After speaking with negotiators, around 3:00 p.m., Mackey allowed the woman to leave. She was offered medical care at the scene as a precaution but was not injured.

Just before 4 p.m., negotiators convinced Mackey to surrender. Deputies took him into custody without incident.

"I applaud the quick work of teamHCSO. They used their advanced training and experience to end this situation without further incident," said Sheriff Chad Chronister. "No one should be the victim of domestic violence. Anyone who believes they are a victim should reach out to our wonderful community resources or 911 in an emergency."
