FDOT grant supports HCSO's Speed: Know Your Limits Program

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office was awarded a $354,000 traffic safety subgrant by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) for the Speed: Know Your Limits Program.   

The grant will reimburse HCSO for overtime for deputies, as well as equipment with the purpose of educating the community about speeding and aggressive driving. HCSO will conduct high visibility operations until September 30, 2023, in hopes of decreasing speeding and aggressive driving-related crashes in Hillsborough County. 

According to the National Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA), there were 33,244 fatal crashes in 2019.  Approximately 17% of the drivers involved were speeding at the time of the crash and 26% of fatal crashes involved at least one speeding driver. 

-$300,000.00 for overtime salary and benefits for law enforcement officers, benefits to include FICA (Social Security and Medicare), Retirement, and Workers Compensation 

-$54,000.00 for speed measurement devices
