The Board of County Commissioners unanimously approved Commissioner Stacy White's proposal to expand and fund the Sheriff's Office Crossing Guard Program to now include middle schools. This is a historic move, now Hillsborough County will be the first county in Florida to have a crossing guard program for middle school students. With this expansion, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office will hire 141 new crossing guards, 24 new supervisors and two new community service aides to help recruit, administer and oversee the program."I am committed to student safety whether on campus or on the way to campus. To me, it is one of the highest priorities," said Sheriff Chad Chronister. "I commend and applaud the County Commission for their diligent work and commitment to the safety of children in our community. I am proud to be a partner with such a progressive board that continues to make such bold moves to create an even safer Hillsborough County.
HCSO's Motor and Traffic Unit will continue to monitor school zone areas until the new positions are filled. The program will be implemented in a three-year phase, allowing time to complete the recruitment and hiring process.
