Sheriff Chad Chronister and the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office are proud to announce a significant achievement in public safety.

Despite the ongoing population growth within our county, the crime rate has experienced a notable decline, showcasing the effectiveness of innovative strategies and collaborative community efforts in ensuring the safety and security of residents.

Sheriff Chad Chronister expressed his pride in the accomplishment. "Six years ago, I made a promise to the residents of Hillsborough County to prioritize effective crime prevention strategies. We are committed to being not only tough on crime but also smart on crime. Today, I am thrilled to share that our efforts have yielded remarkable results."

As of December 31, 2023, the crime rate impacting people and property has decreased by 8% in 2023 compared to the previous year. This reduction encompasses various crimes, including aggravated assault, robbery, vehicle theft, and credit card fraud.

This success is widely in part due to a multifaceted approach that combines proactive policing, cutting-edge technology, and community engagement. Sheriff Chronister has implemented several initiatives aimed at crime prevention and detection, ensuring that our county remains a safe and secure place to live and work.

One initiative is the establishment of the HCSO Firearms Lab, one of only four in the entire state, which has expedited the processing of casings and weapons used in crimes, thereby enhancing our ability to apprehend offenders efficiently. Additionally, the creation of the Auto Theft Task Force has led to a substantial decrease in motor vehicle-related crimes, with a clearance rate of 33% in 2023 compared to the national average of 9.2%.

Moreover, Sheriff Chad Chronister acknowledges the pivotal role of detention vocational and educational programs in reducing recidivism rates and providing inmates with opportunities for rehabilitation and skill development.

Community policing initiatives have also played a crucial role in fostering trust and collaboration between law enforcement and residents. Through programs like Walk It Talk It, HCSO deputies actively engage with the community, gaining valuable insights into local dynamics and concerns; this allows for targeted crime prevention strategies and facilitates quicker issue resolution.

Sheriff Chronister emphasized the collaborative nature of public safety, acknowledging the indispensable role of the community in creating a safer environment. "Safety is a shared responsibility, and we are honored to work alongside the Hillsborough County community in our shared commitment to maintaining peace and security."
