HCSO UNVEILS NEW MENTAL HEALTH STABILIZATION UNIT

On April 29, 2026, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office unveiled a new Mental Health Stabilization Unit at the Falkenburg Road Jail, expanding our ongoing commitment to inmate wellness, rehabilitation, and safety.

The program is designed to stabilize inmates, safely reintegrate them into the general detention population, and ultimately support a healthy reentry into the community upon completion of their sentences.

Since October 2017, HCSO’s Mental Health Stabilization Unit has provided a structured, treatment-focused environment for inmates diagnosed with serious mental illnesses, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and major depression. This new unit builds on that foundation, increasing our capacity to provide care and support to those in our custody and care.

The new 50-bed unit was designed from the ground up to meet specialized needs, incorporating best practices and improvements identified over the past nine years.

“The Mental Health Stabilization Unit is one example of how we are creating environments that prioritize inmate mental health and support rehabilitation,” said Sheriff Chad Chronister. “We have expanded programming throughout our jails to include substance abuse treatment, mental health counseling, vocational training, and direct connections to community resources that help inmates get their lives back on the right path upon release.”

The Mental Health Stabilization Unit is operational as of April 30, 2026.

The unit is funded through a $5 million grant from the federal CARES Act and builds on the proven model already in place, while adding significant enhancements, including upgraded cameras, improved recreation yard, and new flooring.
