UPDATE: John Skeen, 56, has been arrested in connection to Friday night's fatal shooting.

On Friday, March 10, 2023, three friends were staying at a residence in Ruskin for a fishing trip. That evening, the three went to a local bar and later returned home. A verbal altercation ensued between the victim and Skeen. During the verbal altercation, the suspect discharged a firearm, which struck the victim, resulting in his death.

"What should have been a fun fishing trip filled with great memories, turned into a tragic weekend," said Sheriff Chad Chronister. "Violence is never the solution to a disagreement. Our hearts are with this victim's family and we hope this arrest will bring some sense of closure to the loved ones."

Skeen was arrested for Second Degree Murder with a Firearm in Polk County.
 

ORIGINAL RELEASE: The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office is conducting a homicide investigation in Ruskin.

On Friday, March 10, 2023, just before 10:00 p.m., deputies responded to the report of a shooting in the 300 block of Manatee Drive. Once deputies arrived, they discovered a male victim with an upper body gun shot wound, and began performing life-saving measures.

Hillsborough County Fire Rescue arrived and transported the victim to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

“I’m saddened by this senseless loss of life,” said Sheriff Chad Chronister. “Our detectives are currently working to determine what led up to this fatal shooting. If anyone has additional information, please contact us immediately.”

This is an isolated incident and there is no threat to the public. At this time, the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact HCSO at (813) 247-8200.
